Forehead Lift

Surgical/Procedure name:
Lateral Brow Lift, Coronal Brow Lift

Common name:
Forehead Lift, Brow Lift

Introduction

A Forehead Lift can leave you looking younger and help to get rid of the horizontal lines and furrows that sometimes give people an angry, sad or tired appearance. The procedure cosmetically corrects sagging in the forehead skin, upper eyelids and eyebrows. It minimizes the creases that develop across the forehead, or those that occur high on the bridge of the nose; improves what are commonly referred to as frown lines; and repositions a low or sagging brow.

There are two methods to lift your forehead and eyebrow areas:

  • the classic lift
  • endoscopic lift.
  • The classic lift involves one continuous incision, beginning at the level of your ears and going up around your hair line. Depending on where your hair line is, the surgeon will move the incision line to avoid a visible scar. For instance, if you are a man who is balding, the surgeon can make the incision mid-scalp, so the scar can be hidden in the remaining hair.

Here's how the endoscopic lift differs: Instead of making one continuous incision, your surgeon will make a few shorter incisions in the scalp. He or she will insert a scope (small camera on the end of a thin tube) into one of the incisions in order to view the tissues and muscles from a screen. At the same time, he or she will use another device inserted in another incision to make the necessary alterations.

In this procedure, small titanium anchors are used to secure the offending tissue once it's altered appropriately. Those anchors are tiny, but mighty. They'll keep your tissue under control for years. Because the incisions are smaller, this procedure is less invasive. You will experience minimal scarring and shortened recovery time.

    Pre-Operative Care

Before surgery please inform your surgeon of any allergies, all medical conditions, and any medication that you are taking (both prescription and non-prescription). To eliminate the chance of post op. bleeding you should avoid aspirin and any medication containing aspirin or brufen for two weeks prior to surgery. You should also not smoke for 2 weeks prior to surgery as smoking can affect your reaction to the anesthetic and slow down the healing process. Patients that suffer from hypertension must inform the surgeon prior to surgery.

If you have short hair, you may wish to let it grow so that you will be able to easily conceal the scar while it is healing.

    Post Operative Care

Your surgeon will remove any dressings within 24 hours of your procedure.  You will probably experience swelling and bruising, which can also affect other parts of your face, in including your cheeks and eyes. The swelling should be gone in about a week. For at least two days following surgery, you should keep your head elevated to alleviate the swelling, and you can gently apply ice packs to the affected region.

The stitches or staples will usually be removed after 1 week.

For the first month patients should avoid any strenuous activities such as jogging, bending, heavy housework, sex, or any activity that may increase your blood pressure. Exposure to the heat or sun should be limited for several months following surgery, including spas and saunas.

    Results

Healing will continue for several weeks as the swelling dissipates and incision lines refine and fade and it may take several months for your complete recovery.

Almost all patients are happy with the results and achieve a younger appearance. The procedure can minimise the effects aging for years.

Life-long sun protection will help to maintain your rejuvenated appearance by minimizing photo-aging or sun damage. In addition, a healthy lifestyle will also help extend the results of your rejuvenated, more youthful appearance.

    Risks and complications

The most common risks are swelling, bruising, infection, scarring, bleeding and numbness, or change in sensation, due to nerve damage. Although you may experience a change in sensation or numbness this is usually temporary and gradually rectifies itself within 12 months of the procedure.

If you have fine or thin hair, the scar may be more visible than with candidates who have thick hair. Hair does not grow through scar tissue, although if necessary there is a very reliable procedure to correct this later by hair transplant. These risks are reduced, but not eliminated, with a new procedure where the brow is lifted endoscopically.

Very occasionally, nerve damage may lead to a loss of ability to raise the eyebrows or wrinkle the forehead. Additional surgery can correct the problem. Loss of sensation along or around the incision is also common, but this is usually temporary. Rarely does this affect patients permanently.
